Districts Retain TIA-Designated Teachers at Higher Rates than Non-TIA-Designated Teachers

The Texas Education Agency conducted an internal analysis of the impact that the Teacher Incentive Allotment (TIA) has on teacher retention. TIA-designated teachers were more likely to remain in their districts than non-TIA-designated teachers by nine percentage points.

District Retention Rates (%) for Non-TIA Designated vs Designated Teachers

TIA designated teachers in this dataset does not include National Board teachers. Retention shown for teachers with fte ≥ 0.5.

The data indicates retention for TIA-designated teachers improves as more teachers become designated, suggesting that new districts adopting TIA are likely to see similar retention benefits.

Districts participating in TIA find that their systems support teacher retention through fair and accurate performance evaluations, teacher recognition and advancement opportunities, and added compensation. Keeping experienced teachers in the classroom maintains instructional quality, improves student outcomes, and reduces the costs and burdens associated with high turnover.
